Physician Referral Collaboration Software

Description:
Visions@Work is a company that has developed a collaboration software product, called Preferr, for use by physicians. The software allows physicians to refer their patients to other physicians, as long as those physicians are Preferr users. Preferr charges physicians on a subscription basis and operates as a “Software as a Service” web-based application. This reduces the amount of setup time and cost for physicians. The physicians benefit from this software because the software reduces the time required to create a referral and increases the amount of referrals received.
Use Case:
Refer Patient: A physician logs on to Preferr and enters patient information (or searches for an existing patient). That physician initiates a referral by selecting a provider. The physician then has the option to upload or fax any relevant clinical information about the patient, such as x-rays or lab results. The receiving physician can accept or deny the referral, or request additional information. Both physicians are able to message each other through Preferr in order to discuss the patient.
Standards:
This software does not appear to be using any industry-wide software standards however it does conform to the HIPAA regulations regarding patient privacy.
Canopy’s Mobile Consumer Directed Healthcare (CDH) Software application

The Mobile Consumer Directed Healthcare (CDH) Software application, created by Canopy Financial, is an iPhone and iPod app that provides users the ability to search for medical procedures that are eligible to be paid through tax-advantaged CDH spending accounts (e.g. Health Savings Accounts). Once the user’s search determines the procedure’s eligibility, the app will display results that map local providers of the specified procedure as well as the customary cost of that procedure based on the user’s zip code.
Goal: Find a local provider of an affordable procedure eligible for payment through a CDH spending account
A patient (the primary actor) needs to have an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) performed on an injured knee to determine the severity of the injury. That patient also happens to have an FSA (flexible spending account) provided through an insurer, as well as an iPhone (and Canopy’s app downloaded). The patient searches “MRI” on the app, discovers it is eligible to be paid through his/her FSA, and finds a local provider with an affordable price for the procedure.

Use Case:
Physician (primary actor) has instantaneous, on-the-go access to patients EMRs so as to efficiently manage and respond to patient inquiries and needs and manage the practice (goals).
Web- and mobile-based application developer Life Record provides EMR solutions to physicians in managing relationships with patients (including emergency situations) and communications with office staff. In managing patient relationships, physicians have a full range of tools available to them, from scheduling appointments, instaneous access to a patient's EMR, and perscription fulfillment, among other functionality. Office solutions available to physicians include dictaphone-type functionality, including transcription, and billing updates.
Standards:
The solutions are platform agnostic, as they are available through the desktop over PC and Mac and via iPhone and Google Android mobile platforms. All communications and interactions with patients through the solutions are secure and automatically update to each patient's EMR, even extending to updating records in either Google Health or HealthVault records.

Description:
Clinical Trials.app is an iphone application that allows users to search for registered clinical trials from both the National Library of Medicine and the National Institute of Health. The application offers advanced search, categorical search, user ratings of listed clinical trials, and email functions. Clinical Trials.app makes clinical trial information from government databases easily accessible to doctors, purchasers, and practitioners anywhere, at any time. These users will be able to learn about new products, research trial results for specific products, and make more informed choices on behalf of their patients and organizations.
Use Case:
Primary Actor: Physician – wants to research a new drug/device he’s recently heard about in order to make more informed decisions about prescribing that drug or using that device.
A physician accesses the Clinical Trial application via his iphone while waiting for his associate to pitch out of the sand trap on the 17th hole. He enters a new drug he’s heard of in the search function. The application searches government databases and returns results of all registered clinical trials for that drug. The physician is able to make a more informed decision about prescribing that drug.
Standards:
The only listed standard is that this product is an iphone application.
Turns out HealthVault can be accessed outside of .NET
HealthVault is an XML-based API that is accessed over https and can be called from any platform that supports that approach, but there are caveats to doing so.
You should start by reading our announcement to understand how we are approaching this area.

All of these libraries are currently in an early state of development, and partners that use them are likely to be writing a fair amount of library-level code themselves. There are a few things that we're doing to make that process easier:
1. The libraries we've released contain some of the hard code around authentication, and we will consider doing that for other platforms based on partner interest.
2. We are releasing the source of the .NET libraries in the near future, which should make developing similar libraries much easier.
We are also working closely with selected partners who are going down this route, and will consider working with others on a case-by-case basis."

Description: ADAC's QuadRIS (Radiology Information Systems) Online is an add-on application that enables doctors to access the QuadRIS database using the internet.

Goal: View a patient’s radiology report.
Use Case: A doctor wishes to view a patient’s medical report. The doctor logs into QuadRIS Online with his ID and password. The doctor types in a search using the patient’s name and or ID number. QuadRIS Online provides a list of applicable matches. The doctor locates the specific radiology report s/he wishes to view from the matches provided by QuadRIS Online and chooses to download the report. QuadRIS Online retrieves the report based on the doctor’s criteria and allows the doctor to view the report.
This technology is specifically designed for interoperability with other healthcare systems to encourage productivity. QuadRIS uses the following standards to implement this goal:
